7-Inch Ceramic Gravity Water Filter Candle, White, 4 Pack

Four ceramic filter candles, each measuring approximately seven inches in length, designed to fit a wide range of countertop and table‑top gravity water filter units. The candle body is made from a porous ceramic material that has been fired to create a dense network of microscopic channels. Water passes through these channels under the force of gravity, leaving suspended solids — including sediment, rust, silt, and a proportion of bacteria and protozoan cysts — trapped on the outer surface of the candle. Inside the ceramic shell, a core of activated carbon is often included to further polish the water by reducing chlorine, tastes and odours.

How Ceramic Filtration Performs
The outer ceramic shell functions as a depth filter with an average pore size that physically strains out particles and microorganisms above a certain size. While it cannot claim to eliminate viruses, it is effective at reducing turbidity and common larger organisms such as giardia and cryptosporidium cysts when present in water. As water trickles through the candle wall, the inner carbon core takes up dissolved chlorine and a number of organic contaminants. The combined effect yields water that is visibly clearer and noticeably fresher in taste, making it well suited for drinking, preparing hot beverages and cooking.

Maintenance and Cleaning
Over time, the external surface of the candle may accumulate a layer of trapped sediment, which can slow the flow. The candle can be restored by gently scrubbing it under running water with a clean, non‑abrasive scouring pad or a soft brush. Avoid soap or detergents, as the ceramic can absorb them and later release them into the filtered water. Cleaning is typically needed every few weeks, or whenever the filtration rate drops noticeably. With proper care, a set of four candles can provide reliable service for many months before the internal carbon becomes exhausted.

Replacement Indicators
A dramatic, permanent reduction in flow that is not corrected by scrubbing suggests that the ceramic pores have become irreversibly clogged or that the carbon core is spent. At this point, fitting a new candle is advisable. The four‑pack allows the user to replace a single candle as needed or to refresh all candles in a multi‑candle system simultaneously. Spare candles should be stored in a dry location, as exposure to humidity before use can encourage mould growth on the ceramic.

Installation and Compatibility
Most ceramic candles are secured by a wing nut and a threaded stem that passes through the upper chamber of a gravity filter. A rubber or silicone washer forms a watertight seal. The candle should be tightened by hand only — over‑tightening can crack the ceramic. After fitting, it is sensible to discard the first batch of filtered water to flush any ceramic dust from the new candle. These candles are intended for use with cold, potable water as an additional polishing stage and are not a stand‑alone purification solution for untreated water.
